Big Little Women: A documentary film by Swiss-Egyptian director and writer Nadia Fares
“Three generations of women rebel against patriarchal prohibitions. In this
cinematic letter, Swiss-Egyptian film director Nadia Fares pays tribute to her
father as she recounts 75 years of women’s struggles both in Egypt, her father’s country, and in Switzerland, her mother’s country, where she grew up.
The preparations started in 2018 after contacting and having an agreement with Nawal El Saadawy, the physician and writer who represents one of the characters of the film”

  • Discussions with Egyptian pioneer writer Nawal El Saadawy Before and during the film production, and preparing the topics to be discussed, the questions, and the shooting schedule with the director, Nadia Fares.
  • Researching the women’s situation and liberation movement throughout
    the 20th century through the archives of research centers and media
    institutions.
  • Collecting photos and information from (Women and Memory Forum, Al
    Ahram Newspaper, Al Hilal printing house, Middle East News Agency).
  • Word-by-word translation from Arabic into English for each interview with
    El Saadawy.
  • Issuing contracts and agreements with El Saadawy, the Arabic-French
    translator, and other entities.
  • Sessions of comments on the first cut and second cuts of the film.
  • Applying for festivals throughout the years 2022 and 2023.
  • The film collected 3 awards at the Aswan International Film Festival in
    Egypt, Best Documentary Award at Rotterdam Arab Film, the Jury Award of Casablanca Arab Film Festival and the Critics’ Grand Jury Prize of Stlouis’ Docs Festival (Senegal). It was also screened as part of The Women’s International Film and Arts Festival and Conference (Online), New York, and at the Locarno Film Festival in August 2023.

Theater Productions

“Clash… Digital Resurrection”
A theatre piece using Augmented reality written in German, English, and Arabic, by Swiss writer Irena Kastrinidis and Egyptian writer Nora Amin. It was
performed by the Swiss actress Meret Bodamer and the Egyptian actress Hadeer Mostafa, and directed by the Swiss director Peter Braschler from Maralam Theatre. The play was premiered in Rote Fabrik (Zurich) and performed for 8 nights, then it toured in Egypt and Tunisia.

Responsibilities:
Preparations for the performance started in 2021 with auditions for 12 actresses and 6 writers from Egypt during the visit of the director to Cairo, in addition to introducing him to the cultural scene in Egypt. Creating contact with the Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (DCAF) and its director Ahmed El Attar which resulted in premiering the play for the opening of the festival on October 12 and 13, 2023.
Coaching the Egyptian actress for social and professional life during her stay in Switzerland, dramaturgy for the Arabic scenes, translating into Arabic some of the scenes.
Organizing a tour in Egypt after the opening to perform at: The Jesuits Cultural Center in Alexandria, on October 15 and 16 and Jesuit and Freres for
Development Association on October 20 and 21, 2024.
Coordination for the Tunisia tour: The performance took place in Tunisia during the Journee Theatre de Carthage (JTC), with 2 performances in the festival, then a tour in Nabol and Bizert. I was responsible for changing the translation from Egyptian dialect to Classical Arabic, organizing the audience, and introducing them to the augmented reality glasses.
